A drop in reported Unique Listeners following an app or web player upgrade does not necessarily mean fewer people are listening to your station.
Modern players and apps often improve how listener activity is identified and classified. This can reduce duplicate counting and produce more consistent audience reporting over time.
Older platforms frequently relied more heavily on IP addresses and basic session tracking, which could inflate long-term unique audience estimates. Newer platforms increasingly support technologies such as:
- Listener IDs
- Improved platform identification
- Better session handling
- Consent-aware reporting
As a result, newer reporting methodologies may produce lower but more reliable Unique Listener figures, even where overall listening behaviour remains stable.
When reviewing performance following a migration or upgrade, metrics such as Total Listener Hours (TLH) are often more reliable for before-and-after comparison than Unique Listeners alone.
For a deeper explanation of why this happens and how to interpret post-upgrade reporting, see: Why Metrics Can Change After Player or App Upgrades Why Unique Listeners Are an Estimate, Not an Exact Audience Count
