IP addresses can provide useful context for streaming analytics, but they are not stable or reliable identifiers for individual listeners over long periods of time.
For example:
- Mobile listeners may appear under different IP addresses as they move between networks or coverage areas
- Home broadband IP addresses may change periodically
- Multiple users may share the same outward-facing IP address
- One listener may appear under several different addresses over time
This means the same listener can sometimes be counted multiple times within audience reporting, particularly across weekly or monthly reporting periods.
Historically, many streaming systems relied heavily on IP addresses to estimate audience size because more robust listener identification methods were not widely available. Modern apps and players increasingly use technologies such as anonymous listener IDs to improve reporting consistency and reduce duplicate counting.
While IP addresses still play a role in streaming analytics, they are generally only one part of a broader audience estimation approach.
